Fics like A Little Past the Due Date

“…Good job, Naruto.” Iruka hesitated in handing him the headband. Naruto met his eyes with a smile and grabbed it out of his hand. “Thank you, Iruka-sensei,” he returned, trying to keep his voice casual. He took his time walking to the room of graduates, wanting to savour his first victory in so long. His hitai-ate fit snugly around his forehead, the cloth warm but the metal cool. He’s done! He’s really, finally done! The last two years had been hell. But now, finally, Naruto’s graduated. Yes, he’s late, and yes, he’s fourteen, but he was done. That drowned out everything else. Naruto had to take the genin exams thrice. What if, when he failed, he actually had to repeat a year? How would a fourteen-year-old Naruto, forced onto a team of ‘babies’, with a sensei who’s made a religion out of his past, fare? Featuring a booksmart and slightly more mature Naruto; a reserved, less revenge-obsessed medic Sasuke; a lively, genjutsu-focused Sakura; and a long-suffering Kakashi constantly at his wit’s end. Canon-divergent. Naruto & Kakashi focused. (Title and desc may change.)
