Fics like The Promise of Ever After

Happy endings are rarely linear in nature. Evangeline hadn’t known what she was taking from Jacks when she’d confessed her love and kissed him four years ago. She’s not sure she’d have changed anything even if she had known and it’s that guilt that compels her into action now. Jacks is hurt. He’s hurt and he’s not healing. He’s hurt and he’s human. Donatella had been the one to tell her after Evangeline had written to her in desperation after the first time Jacks had been hurt. The words had sounded pained, the scratch of them against the paper deep and almost angry. Fates are not like us, Evangeline. They cannot love, even for a moment, or they will become human. The thing about being immortal is it gives you more than one lifetime to develop enemies, and Jacks has even more enemies than most. His callous, cruel nature for so many years had left a trail of bodies and angry enemies in his wake, and some of those enemies have resurfaced after hearing the ballads being sung about their love, now. Ballads don’t have happy endings, Little Fox.
