She knew ’cause it wasn’t anything either of them were strangers to hearing. She knew and she was striding one long leg over the other, cat-walking to Roxie, fury-mute, unable to look away. “We’re going to get back into form,” Velma said, coming to a stop right in front of Roxie. “My legs and yours and our arms. Then we’re going to do my move and we’re going to get it right on the first try because I know what I’m doing and,” she said, rolling her head to a nonexistent audience, “as much as it pains me to admit, so do you. Now you do, anyway. Because of me whipping you into shape.” She spun to Roxie. “I hate that I need you to be worth shit in this town anymore, and sweetcheeks, you can say it loud and proud, too. But that’s fine and dandy! I told you before: I can work with hate.”
