EMCOM missions were the worst, in his opinion. Limited radio contact, no one to talk to but yourself, and even then it wasn’t advised that you do much talking at all. They were especially draining when you flew them solo, without another jet to interact with in any way. Just yourself and the dark abyss of the night sky for hours on end. Maverick was getting pretty sick of them, having pulled almost exclusively EMCON missions or solo night patrols for the last two months. He was starting to believe he’d forgotten how to even talk to another human being. It had been so long since he’d interacted with someone in anything other than procedural manners.
