Fics like I should know how you act by now

"Then why am I awake?" Adolin isn't sure what answer to give. He's not calculating, not like Veil or his clever aunt or many, many of the girls he'd courted in the past. He just can't figure out what the truth is. The truth is, Veil slipped out in the middle of the night and he's so aware she's gone that he can't sleep, either. The truth also is that he's got an ambient, haunted sense in these halls even months after having taken Sadeas's life in them. Like blank stares are waiting in each brick-laid crevice. The truth is, as well, that sometimes if Kaladin is too far away, he starts to feel like a flickering candle in the corner of Adolin's eye. Like he can't turn his head to see if it's sputtering out, or tipping and falling, setting the room alight in the process. The truth he says is, "I can't sleep. And I'm bored."
