“Not all soldiers see the front lines,” Mum says, a touch uselessly. “Not all State Alchemists even serve in the field.” Ed shakes his head. “It’s war in Ishval, Mum,” he says. “It’s only a matter of time.” Mum does not live long enough to see the truth in Edward’s words. She doesn’t live long enough to see him throw away his principles, either, though, so there’s that. (AKA, an AU where Ed was born several years earlier than in canon, finds himself in the military under a different set of circumstances, and discovers, aged 15, just how much war changes things.)
