Fics like helpmeet

His optimism about Ellie’s first day ends up proving unfounded. This is because Ellie disappears approximately two hours after they dropped her off. All of the parents with first graders and below get a break from rotation for the first week of school and preschoolers only do four hour days instead of the six hours the other kids have, so they’d been largely wasting time (...among other things) in their newly-empty house, trying not to trip over the absence of their kid. They’d been just about to start ripping down wallpaper in the dining room–a task easier without a 4 year old “assistant” helping–when frantic pounding at the door startles them both. With a parent’s instincts, he knows at once that it’s about Ellie. (ellie starts preschool!) (it...goes)
