Fics like Winning Friends and Influencing Parents

Joel could easily picture the teens of Jackson hanging around a mall food court. And, it was mean to think it about children, but they were dull. He remembered thinking Ellie was weird when they first met. She was weird, no doubt. But that wasn’t a bad thing. She was interesting. She could hold a conversation — often without Joel’s participation. The kids she was hanging out with were… just kids. Their parents were assholes. They made little comments. They told her off for her language. There was an idea that Ellie was too worldly, being from Boston and foulmouthed. (Ellie and Joel settle into Jackson but making friends is hard and Joel has to step in.)
