Fics like Humanity's Endling - Act I: Dust in the Wind

Endling / ˈɛnd lɪŋ / - An individual living thing that is the last survivor of its species or subspecies and whose death consequently means the extinction of that species or subspecies. “Project Gaia was doomed from the start - and I right along with it.” A 28-year-old human engineer who was randomly selected to be his research team’s ‘Human Legacy Preservationist’ is placed in cryogenic stasis and awakens over twelve thousand years later in his worn down, ancient tomb of a bunker tucked deep into what has become a dry desert. Before long, he realizes that life has moved on without humans, and he struggles to come to grips with both the new world he finds himself in… and the somber weight of being the last of his kind.
