Careful was not a word that Jackson ever associated with his partner; the man wore recklessness like he wore his garishly colored suits. He might show tact and finesse with clients but he barged into conversations with non-paying entities with the grace of a coked-out bull in an underinsured china shop. If he was measuring his words, something was deeply serious to him. The answer meant something to Holland, which meant Jackson couldn’t just ignore it and try to drift back off to sleep. “Yeah, yeah.” Jackson grunted, voice rasping. He coughed, rolling over to face Holland after a moment. “What’d you mean?” “Does it bother you,” Holland repeated in a slower voice, as if that would clear everything up. It didn’t. -- Jackson would be content to either admire his partner or go to sleep, but he cannot seem to do either. Holland is bound and determined to put some doubts to rest. Too bad he can't seem to tell Jackson what they are.
