Fics like I’m The Only Hero Left Alive

‘Joel had never exactly been best friends with sleep. Ever since he was a child, sleep had always seemed to forsake him, the snoring slumber of his brothers in their bed in their shared room as likely to taunt his insomnia as it was to lull him. Medication failed more frequently than it worked, and he’d known it had the potential to make him a liability on a crew, but he’d still yearned for the stars. What were forests like emeralds and obsidian and snow-capped mountains, ethereal greens and blues in the sky and howling winds, compared to the adventures beyond the mundanity of home?’ OR Four years ago, a devastating accident left the teenaged Joel the only surviving member of his pirate crew. Afterwards, he turns to a life of mechanical repairs and drinking on the Hangar, a spacestation on the fringes of human civilisation. But now he has to return to space again for the first time since he arrived, with three cadet-school dropouts as his crew. When a mission to gather tech from ships stranded on an alien desert turns into something darker, Joel is forced to face the past he thought he’d left behind, and what he and his new crew find reveals to them a dark secret at the epicentre of human-controlled space.
