Fics like You Can Owe Me One

It’s a million degrees today. And Riff feels like he’s swimming through the air. There’s a weird feeling around the city. Like the heat that’s soaked into the pavement and buildings has muddled people’s brains too. People are sluggish, sure, but Riff recognizes short fuses when he sees them. He’s not in the mood to fight today, so he decides to get out of the neighborhood, find a park with some shade that he can nap in. He’s halfway to his destination when his eye catches against a recognizable body. It’s just his luck that it’s when he’s trying to avoid any mess that he runs into the leader of the Sharks. Bernardo doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all, just sitting on someone’s stoop—nobody could in this heat. But the short fuse is there, and as soon as he sees Riff, he’s ready to go.
