“Dances are just institutions created by schools to make teenagers feel ugly and awkward,” she tells him darkly, working hard to push the image of Paxton in his suit at last year’s Prom from her mind. He’d picked her up at home with a corsage and a bunch of flowers for her mom and told her she was beautiful all night. Ben snorts. “Methinks she doth protest too much.” Devi rolls her eyes, correcting him: “It’s ‘the lady doth protest too much, methinks’, genius – and I meant what I said.” He sounds amused when he says, “Sure.” She scoffs, “I didn’t realize I was talking to a lobbyist for high school dances.” “Shut up and answer the question.” “What was the question?” she asks, feigning ignorance, “I never really listen when you talk.” - Canon-divergent High School AU. Devi never kissed Ben in Malibu. Now Paxton's gone off to College, Devi's heart is broken and she needs to enlist Ben's help to make it through Senior Year.
