Fics like If you ever worry about doing something embarrassing in front of your crush, just remember some people attempt murder and you can do better

Sometimes Hijikata wonders why he bothers trying to salvage the Shinsengumi’s reputation if the Shinsengumi itself is just going to destroy what’s left of it anyway. It’s not the kind of question anyone should be asking themselves on a Wednesday night on an overtime shift, without coffee or nicotine, but his life hasn’t been normal in a very long time and now there’s nothing he can do about it except suffer and wonder what he did in a previous life to deserve this. Or: there are murders happening all over Edo, the ocean is a dangerous place, Gintoki becomes a side character, and Hijikata can't catch a fucking break
