If it ever became the case that Sybil was in imminent danger of engagement, Havelock would simply have to marry her himself. He was already reckoning with far too many adversaries on far too many sides as it was without seeing any of them propelled to greatness on a mighty tide of Sybil. It was a great pity that there truly was no one else in the city worthy of his trust, who he could see married to Sybil without fearing for her happiness or the city's future. He would have to keep his eye out. Perhaps a mildly suitable candidate might be found somewhere in the city, someone who, in time, might be groomed sufficiently to be permitted to groom.
