The windows facing the east are showing a red sliver of sun, rising slowly but surely, as Yusuf looks at it, bleary-eyed and willing time to stop. Normally, he would cherish the opportunity to watch the pinks and oranges bleed into each other and paint everything in a rosy haze, but today it only fills him with a sense of loss. Nicolò comes back into the room, clad in only his thin, threadbare undershirt. He is carrying a basin of warm water and soap, linen towels slung over his broad shoulders. “It is time,” his lover says in his melodious accent, and Yusuf turns away from the treacherous dawn in front of him. Right this very moment, he hates this barbaric country and its archaic laws. He hates his husband, who all but bought Yusuf in return for a promise not to invade Yusuf’s homeland, and who then couldn’t even care enough to actually be present for the wedding. He almost hates Nicolò, who was ordered to stand up in place of his Lord at the wedding, and then lie down in place of his Lord in the marital bed. *** Nicky had to take the place of his Lord in the marriage bed. (Un)Fortunately, he fell in love with his Lord's new husband within seconds of meeting him.
