Sidney Crosby is long past his rookie days. He hasn’t been scruffed on the ice in years. No one would dare try now, not with the C on his chest. That only makes it all the more horrifying when Jody Shelley gets a hit on him mid Flyers game, rocking him into the boards and knocking the air out of him. Sid’s helmet slips off. He goes down hard. The referee blows the whistle, already motioning for Shelley to go to the penalty box. Sid’s face is bloody, his helmet and stick several feet away. He turns to look and say something nasty, but before he can get the words out, Shelley takes him by the unprotected scruff with a sweaty, rough, anger pheromone-baked glove, and shakes. OR Sid gets scruffed, bites his assailant, and finds himself spiraling to feel safe again after, hormones out of whack and trust in hockey fractured. Everyone is scared to touch him. Except for one Evgeni Malkin.
