Fics like A Box of Memories

He takes the last item out of the box. It's a cassette tape, but smaller than the ones that Mama used to listen to sometimes, in the afternoons before his father arrived home. The label doesn't have a title or a track list printed on it, either. Instead, someone has scrawled 'September 2003' on it in blue ink. Four months before Mama died. Ilya's stomach clenches as he realises what he's looking at. It's a tape from the answering machine that used to sit in the living room next to the landline. While in Moscow for his father's funeral, Ilya receives a box of items that belonged to his mother, including a cassette tape. It's probably unwise to go onto the ice in Montreal the following week after finally listening to it. But Ilya has never met an unwise decision that he didn't want to grab with both hands and call his own.
