After Caine almost kills Abel, they secure him in one of the spare human rooms. It begs the question- what do they do with him? No one expects him to be completely unresponsive when he wakes up. No matter what they say, how they approach him, he won't say a word. He barely acknowledges they're there at all. As a last ditch effort to get answers, Caine goes to talk to Abel himself, and he realizes there's something deeply wrong with him. He's not just playing the silent game because he's being stubborn. (Aka an alternative ending and Au based on the events of chapter 31 of "Think of Tomorrow) I'd recommend reading it first otherwise this won't make much sense. Though I don't mind explaining in the comments.
