Fics like The Weight of the Long Game

“You’re breaking up with me?” The words—words Ilya hadn’t even managed to say inside his own head—sounded unbearable spoken out loud. “I just think we need time to understand what is best for us,” Ilya said slowly. “We have so much… history. So many feelings. I can’t think straight when you’re close to me. And I’m not well, Shane. I need to focus on getting better.” “But we have a plan, Ilya!” Shane burst out. The flatness in his voice shattered, replaced by raw panic spilling through every word. “We have a plan—we’re playing the long game, remember? And I know it feels like we’ve been waiting forever, but we’re getting there!” “Are we, Hollander?” or Ilya makes a decision after one of the biggest arguments he’s ever had with Shane in their long relationship. To him, it’s the right decision—made for Shane’s sake as well as his own. But he’s no longer alone, and many people help him realize that sometimes our minds deceive us, and that we’d be better off trusting the people who love us.
