He could smell the smoke before he caught sight of the small tendril coming out of the upstairs bathroom window. For a brief moment he almost considered ignoring it, assuming Effie was sneaking one of her cigarettes she didn’t think he knew about. But it didn’t smell like cigarette smoke.. it smelled more like something was burning. Alarmed, Haymitch jogged towards the house and took the stairs two at a time before reaching the closed bathroom door; he went to jiggle the handle but found it locked. “Effie??” he knocked hard on the door, “everything ok in there?” He tried to keep his voice even, but she had been acting out of sorts the last few weeks and he honestly did not know what waited for him on the other side of the door.
