On anyone else, the somewhat botanical scent would be welcoming, a kind of fragrance that makes Zanka think of the stories Delmon tells about watering plants and taking care of gardens. Any other Cleaner may mistake it for incense burning in Zanka’s room, but no, Zanka knows what it actually is. Because there’s a sharpness behind it, a familiar note that reminds him of metal claws and poisons that make colors taste like sticky candies while words dribble out into unrecognizable sounds. Zanka allows himself to say a name. The name. “Jabber.” (Or: Zanka comes home to a mess. He’s not as upset as he should be).
