Fics like Take it as a sign, you're badly needed

He hasn't put down the ball of yarn that was once a fine thread hanging from his shirt; he plays with it between his fingers, the only entertaining activity Peter has allowed himself while he sits at the bottom of the stairs. He's been in the same position for hours, hours during which his eyes return again and again to the security door not far from him. "Here you are." Peter turns his torso slightly, watching Colonel Rhodes struggle down on his prosthetics to reach his side. At any other time, he would get up to help him, sinking into a pool of guilt for making him make the trek to the security area. But it doesn't feel like any other time in a long time. "FRIDAY told me you could be here." "Snitch." "She can be a bit of a pain," Colonel agrees. "But I think she means well." "I suppose so." Peter returns to his original position, drawing his knees up to warm them against a sudden gust of wind. "Dinner is ready. You can resume your vigil when you've had a full stomach." Behind the thick, heavy, supposedly indestructible confinement door is the fugitive super-soldier assassin, Bucky Barnes. Peter thinks Bucky isn't a good nickname for a monster.
