Fics like The Things We Cannot Save

After a routine patrol ends with a wrecked bodega, a fresh gash against his cheek, and the uncomfortable realization that trauma may have left more behind in him than Peter Parker wants to admit, he walks into a church simply because the lights are still on. You don’t know that the hungry, bruised boy in front of you is Spider-Man. Peter doesn’t know that the endlessly helpful girl serving parish suppers is making herself useful because she can't let anyone truly know her. Neither of you intends for one meal to become another visit. Or another. Or for Peter Parker, little by little, to begin existing again in a place where people remember his name. But loving someone is considerably harder when Peter believes everyone he loves is safer without him, especially when the thing beneath his skin is beginning to make him wonder whether something evil has been inside him all along.
