Fics like Imperfect Machine

In the months following Bashir and Garak’s stint in Internment Camp 371 and Bashir’s outing as an augment a few weeks later, Julian has not been doing well mentally. But because he’s always worn a mask of forever living up to expectations, he can’t figure out how to get people to see that he’s not doing well, and even though he wants them to, he’s also afraid to let them at the same time. So, when Starfleet Medical comes in with a too-good-to-be-true therapy experiment that could ease trauma and PTSD for potential upcoming-war victims—Julian jumps at the chance to be the first one to test it out… Garak feels like there’s something fishy about the whole thing and takes it upon himself to stay with Julian throughout the week-long experiment to make certain that the doctor is actually safe. As it turns out, he winds up being right—as the experiment winds up drawing Julian’s mind to alternate realities—Not at ALL what it was supposed to do…But strangely enough, these alternate reality visions crack open the two’s relationship into something more, something deeper—and in the end, actually does help Bashir get past his trauma.
