Fics like stabbing stars in your back

Max goes to the nest and stands at the edge. George feels small and stupid, one of Max’s cloaks working in his hands as he kneads the fabric. Max leans over and picks up a scrab from the nest, a small blanket, and presses it to his face briefly. Then— pulls away. Grimaces at the smell. He drops the blanket, disgusted at George’s scent. "God, George," Max mutters, his voice muffled behind his hand, gravelly and choked. He won't look directly at him. "What is that?" // Everything should fix itself when George's pack return from the war. But it's never that easy, is it?
