Fics like The scrawny Recruit

Twelve-year-old Alaric uses his dead older brother's birth certificate to enlist in the elite Palace Guard. Under King Cassius’s new regime, there is no nobility left to buy a child's way out of a death sentence, when he is discovered. But Cassius sees something in the child's fierce, desperate nerve: raw iron capable of being forged into steel. Stripped of his uniform and placed as Guard Captain Gideon’s personal ward, young Alaric must navigate the strict, unyielding world of the royal palace.
