Fics like A Theory Of Unfinished Things

“You have an alarming habit, Granger, of mistaking forgiveness for absolution.” “And you have an alarming habit of polishing your misery until it starts to resemble virtue.” “Christ, Granger. Buy me a drink before you dismantle me that thoroughly.” “Please. You’ve got a cellar full of wine older than your bloodline. You can afford to be dismantled on your own tab.” His mouth curved, slow and thoroughly indecent. “Fuck me. I’m going to fall in love with you, aren’t I?” 18 months after the war, Hogwarts reopens. Hermione returns. Draco does too: thinner, bitter, done with blood purity, and speaking to Snape’s portrait after midnight. Hermione listens. Snape knows. Their inquiry asks whether the dead can testify through portraits. Hermione sees magic no one understands; Draco sees one chance to free Blaise from Azkaban. Between midnight research, Theo’s interference and Draco’s disastrous jealousy, they fall in love. They leave Hogwarts without each other. Five years later, Draco has one argument left: “I don’t want to go back, Hermione. I want to arrive late to your life and spend the rest of mine earning the right to stay.”
