Fics like The masks that keep us safe

The Fire Lord had two heirs: one, a beautiful princess who was placed on a pedestal from the moment she came into the world; the other, a cowardly prince the people saw as pitiful. From the moment Zuko could think for himself, he realized his father hated him. Ozai would burn him any chance he got. The scars littering his arms and stomach were lingering proof of that hatred. By the time Zuko was ten, his father had all but dismissed him as his son, placing Azula as the heir to the throne and treating Zuko as little more than a servant, still burning him whenever the drink hit him right. Even at eighteen—the age Zuko was now—his father still held his head against the ice-cold floor of the throne room, his hand burning the same spot on his arm over and over again. Azula cackled at the screams coming from Zuko. Once it was over, the only treatment he received came from his uncle. Iroh. In the west wing of the palace, hay littered the floor where they sat on smelly bedrolls. The clothes they wore were ragged, unfit for a general and a prince. Iroh dipped the cloth into the water once again, the clear bucket now turning a light pink with blood and burned skin.
