Mark Watney is 6 years old when he first learns that the sun is dying. He doesn't remember a version of the world before it adapted to that fact. This is just what growing up looks like, where heat is a rationed resource and hope is measured in countdowns for a solution from three figures who flew toward the problem instead of away from it. He doesn't grow up wanting to escape that world—he grows up wanting to be useful in it. And it takes him a lifetime to realize those can be the same thing; when he stops being the kid who dreamed of going to space and becomes the man who was going. — OR: What if, before he left for Mars, Mark Watney had grown up on the Earth the Hail Mary left behind? Snapshots of Mark’s life growing up on a dying planet, and how that inspires him to become a botanist/engineer, and later, an astronaut. A pre-canon take on The Martian, fused with the canon compliant timeline of Project Hail Mary to explore the implications to Earth with the existence of Astrophage and eventually Taumoeba. Let the Weir Cinematic Universe commence!
