When a late-night gas leak followed by a small electrical fire leaves Lucy Chen's apartment building condemned, she's forced to move out with only a few hastily packed bags. With repairs expected to take at least two months and every other option falling through, Sergeant Grey asks Tim Bradford to let her stay in his spare room "just until she's back on her feet." Tim agrees—reluctantly. As the weeks pass, what starts as an awkward living arrangement turns into an easy routine. Shared breakfasts before shift, late-night takeout after difficult cases, and quiet evenings watching television become part of daily life. They begin to know each other in ways they never could as just training officer and rookie—or even as partners. Lucy sees the softer side Tim rarely lets anyone else see, while Tim discovers he doesn't mind coming home to someone waiting for him. But just as living together starts to feel normal, Lucy gets the call she's been waiting for: her apartment has finally been repaired. Packing her things should be a relief. Instead, both of them are forced to confront a question neither has wanted to ask.
