"Matthew? You in there? Dinner's on the table!" "Coming!" Matthew shouted, the word sounding foreign and raspy in his own ears, as if his throat had forgotten how to vibrate. He scrambled to pull his sleeve down, the fabric of his oversized hoodie catching on the fresh, tacky wetness of his arm. The adrenaline that had just peaked crashed into a shivering aftershock, leaving his limbs feeling heavy and humming. He wasn't hiding a crime, he was guarding a secret garden of sensation that belonged only to him. "Matthew? I'm coming in!" "Wait!" Matthew yelled, the panic spiking as he realized he hadn’t cleaned the surface of the desk. He lunged forward, his arm sweeping across the wood in a frantic motion to shove the mirror and the silver blades beneath a stack of old notebooks. The movement was too sudden; the fresh cuts on his arm flared with a sharp, stinging heat, and he hissed through his teeth, the sensation sending another jolt of electricity through his spine. He barely managed to snap the mirror shut before the door handle clicked and the room flooded with the bright, artificial light of the hallway.
