The virus took the animals. Soon humans replaced animals. In a world of only men and most importantly extinct animals, prisoners don't serve time, they serve former animal functions. Some give blood on padded tables, locked and humming and desperate for release that never quite comes. Others pull plows in the dust, muscles built by chemistry, need built by design, leaking and aching and never empty.
