For entire summers, it was just the two of them, following in each other's footsteps towards adolescence; soft-hearted and unencumbered, yet too fraught with childhood's wide-eyed optimism to ever imagine they would get separated. For years afterwards, they orbited each other like lost planets; then, on an otherwise uneventful Wednesday afternoon, fate put them in each other’s path once again.
