Homology Directed Repair: a natural cellular pathway used in gene editing to incorporate new genes into the DNA. Six years into his stay on Erid, and Grace has a problem. It was becoming clear that it was nearly impossible to create an environment here that was totally free of heavy metals. They permeated the air, they clung to dust and rocks and the outsides of the exosuits, and they literally flowed through the bodies of the residents. Including him. With his health declining, and no viable alternatives, Grace and the science thrums decide to take a chance on a risky procedure; altering Grace's DNA to give him an Eridian's resistance to heavy metal poisoning. What could possibly go wrong?
