“I found an arm.” Silence rings loud and clear on the other end. Distantly, Eddie picks up on the sound of Buck’s blinker. “Pardon?” “I found an arm,” Eddie says again. He’s still staring at it. Its fingers are adorned in rings, but the rest of it is naked. A naked arm. Bare in death like it was in birth. “An arm?” Buck repeats, slow, sounding out each letter like he’s not sure he’s heard Eddie right. “An arm,” Eddie confirms grimly. The arm does not bode well for the rest of his afternoon—the word arm doesn’t even sound real anymore. Unfortunately, the arm is real. Right there. “In a barrel.” He can imagine Buck’s blank, perplexed face vividly. “A barrel?” “Are you gonna keep repeating everything I say?” Or: Eddie finds a severed arm at the farmer’s market. Day: ruined.
