Fics like on a crooked little trajectory

But he needs to be brave for Mom, because that’s what a superhero would do, that’s what a Pokemon Trainer would do. That’s what a Pokemon Master would do. He screws up his face in determination, squaring his shoulders and trying to take up more space than he usually does. He’s not sure he gets the desired effect, though, because his feet don’t even reach the floor, which isn’t very superhero-ish. Mom explains what happened with a smile, even though he can tell she’s in pain. She winks at him here and there, like it’s some joke, like he’s not absolutely unforgivable, like he didn’t break his mom’s arm. He tries to meet her smile with one of his own, tries to be brave for her. He doesn’t know if it works, because he certainly doesn’t feel brave. He doesn’t feel like an arcanine, he feels like a weak little oddish, burying his head in the ground to hide from bigger, larger pokemon. Or: When celebrating his sixth birthday, Ash breaks his mom's arm.
