Fics like silver scales

You pat Carl down, turn his trembling hands skyward to study the gashes carved into the meat of them. Deep, bad. The blood pumps out with arterial force, so red it's almost black. He doesn't cry as you tear your dirty shirt into strips for a makeshift tourniquet, steer him to the car, sit him down as you pack up camp. He just watches you from the streaked window, white face blanched beneath the brim of his hat like that little boy who didn't want to gut a fish all those years ago. You love him the way a river loves it's bed: you made him, he is shaped after you, rocks carved by the passage of water, divots hollowed out from centuries of the same, enduring motion. A silver knife slipped into a silver scaled belly, eased open so wet ropes can spill out. Things he learned, because you taught him. Look at him now.
