Fics like The Things We Carry

Mel has always been good at taking care of everyone else. At work, she knows how to keep moving when the emergency department is falling apart around her. She knows how to calm a frightened patient, cover for a colleague, and tell everyone—including herself—that everything is fine. But some things are harder to ignore than others. When a patient arrives in the ED under circumstances that feel a little too familiar, Mel finds herself caught between the instinct to help, the fear of overstepping, and the uncomfortable realisation that sometimes you can't save someone by simply telling them what they need to hear. As the lines between colleague, friend, and caretaker begin to blur, Mel is forced to confront just how much she's been carrying—and what happens when the person everyone relies on finally needs someone to rely on, too. OR A story about complicated people, quiet acts of care, and the things we don't say until we absolutely have to.
