Fics like intersubjectivity

“Hey, bud,” I say softly. “I’m here, okay? I just want to help you.” Rocky’s vents rattle like a sigh. “I know.” “So what is it that you’re so upset to leave behind?” There’s another long, silent moment, stretching until I start to worry that I’ve finally done it: found the first-ever cultural or personal barrier between us that we can’t cross together. I’m long past the point of being able to pretend that Rocky doesn’t mean the world to me – more than the world, actually, literally. I don’t need to have all my memories back to know that the moment we were reunited after I turned back for him was the happiest I’ve ever been. So I just can’t stand the thought that he’s hurting in some part of himself I can’t reach. Then Rocky says, “Am upset to leave bodies of crew,” and my heart stops. ––– Or: Grace and Rocky stumble together through an interplanetary anthropological exploration of funerals, grief, and meaning, trying to find a way to say goodbye to Rocky's crew.
