Fics like that odd melancholy feeling

“Why did you take me in?” Dick asked into the fabric of Bruce’s sweater. It was a question he’d asked many times over the years. When he was eleven, grieving and lost. When he was fifteen, curious and looking for reassurance. When he was eighteen, furious and lashing out. Bruce always gave the same answer, even now. “Because I saw myself in you. A little boy who’d just lost his parents. I wanted to give you something I didn’t have.” Dick had always nodded, accepting the answer, or in his angry moments, he’d snarl and claim he was nothing like Bruce, despite knowing deep down that they were so similar it was why they clashed and fought and misunderstood each other time and time again. “You did that, you know?” Dick said softly. “You understood it when no one else could. You gave me a family,”
