Fics like time is a river which carries me along (but i am the river)

Ilya’s outside the arena in the blistering cold, fiddling with his lighter, when the awkward-looking Asian kid wanders over and shakes his hand, introducing himself as Shane Hollander. Like Ilya doesn’t know who he is, hasn’t been watching this idiot’s game tape for three years. His palm’s sweaty to the touch, like he’s nervous. It’s almost cute. Twenty-four hours later, Ilya wins the International Prospect Cup and meets Hollander a second time. They shake hands again, and– Ilya’s outside the arena in the blistering cold, and Hollander’s palm is sweaty to the touch, like he’s nervous. It’s almost cute, except that Ilya’s been here before. And when he looks into Hollander’s eyes and sees the terror in them, he knows he’s not the only one.
