Fics like The Shoes At The Door

Kuroda Ryuichiro had learned, over seventy-two years of living, that a household could be measured by its silences. There were peaceful silences: dawn settling over the garden, Kumiko still asleep upstairs, the koi stirring beneath the dark water. There were respectful silences: men kneeling in the main room while decisions were made, each of them understanding that a careless word could alter several lives. There were grieving silences, angry silences, frightened ones. And then there was the silence of a strange boy standing in the entryway with Kumiko’s mobile phone in his hand, staring at three tattooed men as though he had walked through the wrong door and found the gates of hell politely waiting for him. Ryuichiro looked at the boy. The boy looked back. Neither spoke. It started with a phone. Then, one day, 27 pairs of shoes were at the door. Found family, friendship, and evidence that love and belonging does not need to be earned or paid for.
