Fics like Within Shadow, A Friendship Blossoms

A short story written for Solaris: A Final Fantasy Gents Zine set in the Dissidia universe. “Squall!” Firion cried. How many times had he stood and watched a friend perish? How many times had he been powerless to save them? “No…” Firion clenched his fists, resolve swelling in his heart. “Not this time.” Firion sprinted across the flower field, Ultimecia’s laughter deafened by his pounding heartbeat, and he leaped in front of Squall to face Ultimecia’s attack head-on. “Firion?” Squall gasped. “What are you doing?” “I won’t let you die!” In the midst of a team battle against their villainous foes, Firion sacrifices himself to protect Squall from Ultimecia’s final, most powerful attack—Time Compression. But despite Firion’s courageous effort, both he and Squall are hit by the attack and thrown into a nightmare realm composed of each other’s memories and monstrous manifestations of their deepest fears.
