In comparison to what they'd just escaped, sharing a tiny twin mattress felt like a luxury for Joe and Rico. It's not like Joe would've left him alone anyway, so Rico doesn't complain too loudly about their run-down apartment or their sleeping arrangements. It's practical, and more than that, it's nice to remember that Joe hasn't taken off on him yet. The problem then is six months later, when both men are still stuck together in that tiny twin bed, and neither is brave enough to admit that it's become their own personal slice of heaven.
