Journalist Yvaine Cabarrus arrives at Milkweed Acres with a tape recorder, a notepad, and a assignment from Arcadian Agricultural Quarterly: profile the most productive dairy operation in the Celadon Valley. She expects barn tours, production statistics, and maybe a quaint human-interest angle. She does not expect to be greeted by a two-meter-tall woman with curved horns, a swishing tail, and a girlcock thick enough to strain the fabric of her overalls. Milkweed Acres is no ordinary farm. Its herd of twenty-three cowgirls is divided into two castes—bulls, the towering, virile breeders equipped to service and impregnate, and cows, the staggeringly busty milk-producers whose udders yield liters of premium product daily. The farm operates on a strict schedule of milking rotations, heat-cycle management, breeding assignments, and pasture rotations, all meticulously documented in ledgers Yvaine is invited to study. The more Yvaine learns, the more the boundary between journalist and subject blurs.
