Fics like Unpromised

This is how it begins. At least, this is how the story was told to Mallory Glass when she was very young and her Nana Glass was still alive to tell the terrible and beautiful stories of the deep and dark water. Since that time, Carpenter has heard endless variations upon the tale across the face of the Peninsula. After all, truth takes many forms, it seems. A malleable thing, pliant and pliable in the hands of those who tell the story. And yet, the bleeding heart of it, the eye of the storm, the bitter, gritty core of the pearl, lying buried under all the layers of nacre and time, stays immutable and enduring. Some things just cannot be changed. It always begins the same way—with a woman at the edge of the water. A woman who has nowhere else to go.
