Fics like By Merit

Hargrove University was built for people who never have to question whether they belong, but as a final year PsyD student on a full scholarship, and one of the only Black women in your program, you’ve spent five years doing exactly that. When a professor’s sudden medical leave places your work under the scrutiny of Sevika, the department’s famously exacting chair, you expect disaster; instead, she listens, challenges you fairly, and recognizes the strength of what you’ve earned. But her attention draws whispers from colleagues eager to believe you’re receiving favoritism rather than credit for your talent, forcing you to navigate the fraught terrain of ambition, race, class, academic politics, and the thin line between being respected for your work and being accused of not deserving it.
