Fics like nice work if you can get it

“You hiring?” Pete asks, approaching the bar with his most polished smile, freshly brushed and everything. The bartender pauses, huffing out too much breath and taking a second to suck it back in. His smile drops, his eyes widen. “I wish,” he says. Pete hangs on his pause, hoping that silence can change the boy’s mind, only for him to fill it with more bluster. “Only reason I got it is cuz’ the owner was friends with my Da before-” he stops himself very suddenly. Pete knows what that means: before he died. He nods his understanding. - great depression au where pete goes to a bar looking for a job and finds his soulmateee!
