Fics like if my dreams come up empty, and you wash up on the shore

Reality had lost its footing a handful of weeks past, when whispers of assassination and ambush had started to reach their shores. Following the whispers came the bodies, bloodied and bloated beyond recognition, dragged limply back and forth against rough sand by the indifferent tide. Clear as day, however, had been the Ithacan colours of their cloths and the flags, faded and crusted by seasalt but undeniable. From there the story put itself together. An attack on their diplomatic envoy, returning from talks in Sparta, which had both sunk the ship and slaughtered everyone on board. A strategic massacre. What Odysseus should have been doing was tracking down the culprits – there was no shortage of potential forces who wanted to see Ithaca weakened, no shortage of grudges that he had created, when he’d executed every suitor that had plagued their halls. He had brought this down on them. Brought this down on- His thoughts stuttered and stopped, jerking against their reins in refusal to go further.
